The Grosvenor Square Goodbye - Signed & Inscribed - Francis Clifford (pseud. Arthur Thompson)

1974 - Hodder and Stoughton, London - First Edition
A rather interesting association copy, inscribed on the dedication page. The typed dedication reads ‘For my friends in Warwick Lane and Lower John Street, London, and East 49th Street, New York, with many thanks for their help over the years’, there is then a hand written note ‘Thank you, Eric – A, September 1974’, A being Arthur Thompson who wrote under the pseudonym Francis Clifford. He has also signed as Francis Clifford to the title page.

One can only assume that Eric was on of those ’
friends’ who had helped Thompson over the years, as Thompson usually writes his inscriptions to the front of the book, and in this instance has specifically chosen the later dedication page (which is after the title page). Unfortunately we have not had enough time or patience to track down who ‘Eric’ was.

Carrington s Cases - J. Storer Clouston

1920 - William Blackwood and Sons, London - First Edition
‘I don’t believe there is any business in the world in which a man gets more puzzlers as to what is his duty, than in mine.’ said Carrington. ‘In the kind of private work I do, I’m constantly up against the nastiest snags, but one generally has to toughen one’s hide and go ahead anyway.’

Presented with a charmingly illustrated front cover, this Queen's Quorum thriller features the adventures of the wonderful F.T. Carrington, the monocled young private detective ‘with a round, ingenuous, very agreeable face... a little neatly trimmed moustache’ – the inquiry agent, as he preferred to call himself. He tackles crimes and mysteries such as misplaced spouses, haunted houses, and medical misnomers, all done with Clouston’s trademark talent for absorbing plot, balanced with his deft hand for humour.

‘One of the most sought-after collections of detective short stories’ – Eric Quayle,
Detective Fiction.

The Morals of Confucius - Confucius

Circa 1760-80 - Printed for Randal Taylor, London - First Thus
A rare later 18th century reprint of this work and the first to include the folding frontispiece engraving of Confucius (often missing). First published in 1691 and scarce in any early edition, more so this edition with the engraving. In contemporary binding, and with decorations to title page, six headpieces, and three tailpieces.

Beginning with a ‘
Preface’ introducing this translation and its sources, followed by ‘Part First’ titled ‘Of the Antiquity and Philosophy of the Chinese’, then ‘Part II’ which offers selected translations from the three books, and ends with 80 ‘Maxims’.

‘The great Chinese teacher Confucius (551 BC–479 BC) articulated a philosophy based on the concepts of ren (‘benevolence’ or ‘compassion’) and li (‘ritual’ or ‘propriety’). He hoped to create the ideal, superior man (junzi) and thereby facilitate a just society.

Confucius’s teachings were highly influential across China and large areas of east Asia for almost two millennia before this 1691 work offered English readers their first introduction to his philosophical approach. It provides an account of Confucius’s life and times, as well as 80 of his maxims.
