An exceptional example of the first edition. Illustrated with an engraved frontispiece of the ‘Lapwing’ and two colour maps (one folding).
Henry Noel Shore, 5th Baron Teignmouth (1847-1926), writes sympathetically and observantly over three years active service on HMS Lapwing, a 170 foot 800 ton gun boat of the Royal Navy’s ‘China Station’. He covers both the activities, skirmishes and accidents of service as well as numerous journeys inland wherever possible whilst sailing between Hong Kong, China, Taiwan and Japan. Provenance: Bocking Convent, Essex, with their engraved bookplate and date 15.4.10.

Thick octavo (book size 22.8x15.7cm), pp. xv [1] 549 [1] 24 (publisher’s catalogue dated April 1880). In publisher’s blue pebbled cloth, spine lettered ruled and decorated in black and gilt, front panel with gilt and black decorations and gilt vignette of the Lapwing, rea panel ruled in blind, pale brown coated endpapers.
