The History of the St. Leger Stakes - J.S. Fletcher
1902 - Hutchison & Co., London.

The St Leger Stakes is the oldest of the five British Classic races. Dating back to 1776, it has a venerable history, attracting champion thoroughbred racers, including numerous horses owned by the British royals. The event was organized by the Marquess of Rockingham (a former prime minister) and was the idea of Lieutenant Colonel Anthony St. Leger.

Local legend suggests that Anthony St. Leger may have staged a fore-runner of the 1776 race at his private racecourse in Firbeck, South of Doncaster. In 1779, the race moved from Cantley to a new course on the Town Moor, where it remains to this day.
