First edition. Illustrated with 12 gravure plates, 27 illustrations and wonderful photogravure portrait frontispiece.
With chapters on the history of polo, rules, choosing and looking after polo ponies, the expense and danger of polo, as well as recollections from Dale’s own games. Additional lists of Polo Clubs and Principal Tournaments are added to the rear of the text.
Copy owned by Sir Philip Lee Brocklehurst (1887-1975), the second Baronet, of Swythamley Park, who, at the age of twenty, accompanied the 1907-1909 British antarctic expedition headed by Sir Ernest Shackleton (the Nimrod Expedition), where he lost a toe to frostbite after ascending Mount Erebus. Sir Brocklehurst was wounded in 1914 during the first world war. Shackleton, who he met as an undergraduate at Cambridge was Brocklehurst’s best man at his wedding in 1913.
