Nelson & Sons, London - Early Edition [First Edition 1858] The Land and the Book is an illustrative description of the Holy Land with direct references to Biblical passages. William McClure Thomson [1806-1894] was a Presbyterian clergyman and missionary. Educated at Miami University, Ohio, and Princeton Theological Seminary, he was sent as a missionary to Syria and Palestine on two tours of duty. This present work was the direct result of his reflections during these tours.

Heavily illustrated, including 12 full page colour lithographic plates, two maps (one large folding map of Palestine), and over one hundred black and white illustrations.
  In four parts; Phoenicea and Palestine; Northern Palestine; Sea-Coast Plains, Sharon and Philistia; Southern Palestine.   In prize binding of green full calf, spine in six compartments with gilt decorations.   Condition: A very good copy, binding rubbed to edges, half of title plate missing, interior generally clean with some scattered foxing.
