A fine and thus rare First American Edition
Once upon a time there was a little girl called Lucie, who lived at a farm called Little-town.
One of Beatrix Potter’s most successful characters, inspired by her pet hedgehog of the same name, and Kitty MacDonald a Scottish washerwoman. Lucie Carr, a child friend of Potter's, was the model for Lucie. Peter Rabbit & Benjamin Bunny make cameo appearances. The Newlands Valley and the fells are sources for the illustrations.
First American Edition with the year 1905 appearing on the copyright page and correct endpapers (Linder 414 Figure 2 & Quinby plate X (left-side) Linder Figure 3 (right-side)) identical to the English first edition published the same year. Page 20 illustration contains the words ‘How Keld’ etched on the stone (removed around 1910 according to Linder). Title page with last line '36 East 22d Street' and Schlueter imprint on p. 86. Original grey-brown paper boards (issued in pale blue, grey-brown, or green paper boards, no priority given).
