A superb set of Kipling’s classic collection of short stories. First editions in their original fine gilt decorated blue cloth, housed in custom cloth chemises and quarter morocco divided slipcase, with matching navy morocco spine and gilt lettering.
Beautifully illustrated throughout, mostly by Kipling’s father John Lockwood Kipling.
Best-known for the three tales revolving around the adventures of the abandoned 'man cub' Mowgli who is raised by wolves in the Indian jungle, but Kipling’s genius as a story teller shines throughout, eloquently weaving morals together with his subtle, multilayered characters to produce some of the most well loved stories of childhood fantasy such as 'Rikki-Tikki-Tavi', the story of a heroic mongoose, 'Toomai of the Elephants', the tale of a young elephant-handler, and Kotick the ‘White Seal’. Provenance: George Mason La Monte (1863-1927) of Piedmonte Farm, Bound Brook, New Jersey, businessman, philanthropist, and politician, who served as chairman of the board of the Prudential Insurance Company, with his bookplate. Also a small contemporary booksellers label of Angus & Robertson, 89 Castlereagh St., Sydney. Both to the front free endpaper of the first volume.
The Jungle Book - Published: 22 May 1894, 7,000 copies. First edition first printing, first state with page 212 showing printer as ‘R. & R. Clark‘ (second state added ‘Ltd.’).
The Second Jungle Book - Published: 12 November 1895, 10,000 copies. First English edition (the American edition preceded the English edition by three days), page 139 with vignette and with the text of The King’s Ankus stopping abruptly at line 8 page 139 (in the second English edition the missing words are supplied, and the story ends on line 6 of page 141, but without the vignette tail piece (showing the snake and dagger) of the first edition - Stewart 133), 2 pages of publishers ads to rear (missing from the second edition).

In publisher’s smooth blue cloth, lettered in gilt to spines, ruled and blocked with elephants and cobra illustrations vignettes to spines and front boards, all edges gilt, charcoal grey endpapers.
