John Fowles
1963 - Jonathan Cape, London - First Edition
A fine first edition with rather lovely inscription from John Fowles:-
‘For Angharad Ryder
with my hopes for her wings,
in every sense, in this book
so without them
John Fowles, Lyme, 11 Aug 1987’
The accompanying letter from Angharad Ryder explains that Fowles was referring to her taking her pilot’s licence. What is meant by the last sentence we leave for you to decipher... The bookplate to the front is also inscribed ‘Angharad Ryder, With all good wishes, John Fowles 9.x.85.’ Provenance: From the library of Angharad Ryder, of Owl Books, East Sussex, with her sticker to the front, and then on to a Mr Paulter(?) as referenced in the accompanying letter.
Octavo (book size 19.6 x 13 cm) pp. 283 [1]. Publisher’s brick red cloth, spine lettered in gilt, top edge stained brick red. Dust jacket price clipped to the lower edge of front flap.
Also found in variant black cloth binding without the top stain, no current precedence has been verified, although the most sensible suggestion is that they ran out of the brick red cloth and had some black to hand. The dust jacket is the standard first edition dust jacket, none of which ever had any reviews on them. Condition: Fine in fine price-clipped dust jacket. Ref: 110477 Price: HK$ 8,000
