Hymn Book of the Church of England Mission in the Diocese of North-China -
1929Peking
Interesting missionary hymn book. With hymns ‘Drawn Mainly from Hymns Ancient and Modern’. Prepared by the local Diocese, interesting as it was issued prior to the denominations agreement to have a unified hymn book the ‘Universal Praise Hymns’ in the 1930’s. With the poor quality of paper and the small Diocese, it is probably safe to say that a copy in this fine condition would be extremely hard to find.

Typhoons, wreckers, burning and looting, pirates, escape from hostile natives..... A fascinating picture of the tougher side of trading in the 1800’s and the close competition between the three main Hong Kong trading companies during this period. An extremely scarce pair, in stunning condition.

c. 1705Only copy. Folio.
Four hundred anf fifty pages of fascinating hand-written essays, in a fine hand with names and quotations in red ink. The most striking essay is the first, 51 pages, entitled simply "Apothems", extracts or maxims. Its flavour is distinctly Confucian. It derives from a work little known today in the West, the "Ming Xin Bao Jian", "The Perfect Mirror to throw Light on the Mind", an elementary treatise on philosophy. It was the first Chinese book to be translated into any western language, by a Dominican at Manila in 1593, but remained in manuscript. The date of this anonymous manuscript would appear to be circa 1704. Please see details for more information.
